Important Considerations Before Setting Up a Trust

Setting up a Trust must be done with care and proper planning. Consider the following carefully:

Your Trustee must be skilled in:

  1. Accounting
  2. Legal understanding
  3. Language skills
  4. Writing skills
  5. Computer literacy
  6. Completing tax, government, and legal forms

Your Trustee should also be:

  1. A lifelong learner with a willingness to continue self-education

And have:

  1. At least 3 years of business experience
  2. Investment knowledge
  3. Experience with financial institutions, including:
    • Opening and maintaining bank accounts
    • Loans and mortgages
    • Brokerage and investment accounts
    • International banking
    • Offshore gold storage

And definitely be:

  1. Constantly reading and studying trust law and trust administration

It is also a good idea for the Trustee to:

  1. Maintain good creditworthiness as a potential personal guarantor
  2. Have professional connections and colleagues
  3. Be at least 35 years of age for sufficient maturity and life experience

Additionally:

  1. Preferably have no political affiliations to reduce exposure and keep trust assets private

Required Study and Preparation

You cannot run a Trust with employee-only experience. Even if you plan to act as Grantor and appoint a Trustee, you must educate yourself thoroughly.

READ / STUDY:

Trustees must be comfortable working with banking forms, government forms, tax filings, and legal paperwork of all kinds.
