- Legal understanding
- Language skills
- Writing skills
- Computer literacy
- Completing tax, government, and legal forms
Your Trustee should also be:

- At least 3 years of business experience
- Investment knowledge
-
Experience with financial institutions, including:
- Opening and maintaining bank accounts
- Loans and mortgages
- Brokerage and investment accounts

And definitely be:
- Constantly reading and studying trust law and trust administration
It is also a good idea for the Trustee to:
- Maintain good creditworthiness as a potential personal guarantor
- Have professional connections and colleagues
- Be at least 35 years of age for sufficient maturity and life experience
Additionally:
- Preferably have no political affiliations to reduce exposure and keep trust assets private
Required Study and Preparation
You cannot run a Trust with employee-only experience. Even if you plan to act as Grantor and appoint a Trustee, you must educate yourself thoroughly.
READ / STUDY:
- Free Business Trust – 98-Page Training Manual
- Weiss’s Concise Trustee Handbook (available online)
- The Art of Passing the Buck (expensive but considered a comprehensive authority on trusts)
Trustees must be comfortable working with banking forms, government forms, tax filings, and legal paperwork of all kinds.
